Marking twenty-five years of collaboration, the Galerie Nathalie Obadia is very pleased to present the sixth exhibition of the British artist Fiona Rae, recognized as one of the most important painters of her generation. She has called them "Abstracts" to leave no doubt as to the place that her works must leave to the imagination. Between Kandinsky's abstraction and pop-art references, Fiona Rae offers in her paintings a theatrical choreography of forms, pictorial gestures and graphic signs, on the edge of the figurative world. The gesture is spontaneous, but the "cartography" of the canvas is reflected; it is in this paradox that the artist's reflection resides. Defending a conception of painting as "romantic magic" which "will always have its place and its charm", she plays with abstraction, which appears and disappears according to what we recognize or think we recognize when we discover the painting. The figures are familiar, the universe of possible imagery infinite, and from her brushstrokes result ethereal and graceful landscapes of arabesques. The pastel colours draw towards fairy tones and nourish these surrealist visions, nourished by references to modern and contemporary painting, popular culture and digital. Thanks to a new set of paintings on canvas and lesser-known preliminary works, Abstracts is the ideal opportunity to discover Fiona Rae's work.
