« His multiple compositions are much more than simple works. They are a part of him and represent a whole culture. Discover for the first time in France the new paintings of Alvaro Barrington. »

For his first solo show in Paris, the Venezuelan artist Alvaro Barrington takes over the four floors of Thaddaeus Ropac in the Marais. An art at the meeting point of several influences, where art history remains predominant. Known for his compositions where paint and wool meet, Alvaro Barrington presents new works where multiple layers of fabric are piled on top of each other. This use of non-traditional materials is explained in particular by his interest in fashion, traditional weaving methods, street art but also (and above all) for the relationship between abstract art and contemporary music. These new paintings are a mix of references to Joseph Albers' compositions and the cover of the album Mama's Gun by soul singer Erykah Badu. In doing so, Alvaro Barrington affirms his direct legacy of black music, past and present, and its emancipatory power. The artist was born to Granada and Haitian parents. He himself is a mix and grew up between the Caribbean and Brooklyn before moving to London where he currently lives. His work is the result of a varied childhood from which he draws all his influence today. Mixing fabric, concrete and paint expresses his desire to work with the materials in their entirety in order to go beyond their limits and give them as much credit as has been given to painting for centuries. As for the title, it is a direct reference to rap culture that can be found throughout the exhibition. The lyrics are taken from the fancy music of Canadian rapper Drake. By mixing so many references, Alvaro Barrington pays homage to the American multiculturalism that allowed him to forge his own identity.
