"Painting is a window open to the world" according to the theorist Alberti. And Gilles Barbier's new series illustrates this and at the same time is totally opposed to it. He remodels reality according to his intimate memories and daily habits. For his twelfth solo exhibition at the gallery, the Vanuatu artist reverses the usual perception we have of things. Confused by the surprise, you will be overwhelmed if not overturned in an instant! Enter, in, behind, under, on... Paper becomes the surface for the expression of Gilles Barbier's childhood memories. His fascination for "sand drawings" can be felt in his work: traditional drawings from Vanuatu, they take shape as a story is told and they read in all directions. Just like Gilles Barbier's drawings for that matter, which explore the senses and the essence of images of a liberated gesture.
