Immersion. This is the term that best describes the second exhibition that the Centre Pompidou is devoting to Christian Boltanski, 35 years later. With its first self-taught crafts, its shadow theatres tinged with marvels or its vast environments with shaky lights, rooms lit by the works, discover a work that explores the border between the absent and the present. Conceived by Boltanski himself as a vast stroll through the heart of his work, the exhibition is less a retrospective than a series of sequences marking the stages and metamorphoses of his subject. French artist of international renown, Christian Boltanski is at the same time visual artist, photographer, but also sculptor and filmmaker, whose life journey is one of his main sources of inspiration. From the story of childhood to that of the tales and legends he discovers and reinvents, Boltanski becomes anonymous until he produces a true story about men and childhood, men and death, men and memory. This reflection takes place in particular in the transition from "small forms" to "large forms", in which "Doing your time" immerses us. Finally, these fifty or so works make it possible to measure the scale and ambition that the artist has implemented over the past half-century.
