«  Let the Africa2020 Season begin! »

According to Commissioner N'Goné Fall, the Africa2020 Season is "an invitation to look at and understand the world from an African perspective". Called "In Search of Freedom", this special edition is inaugurated with an installation by El Anatsui at the Conciergerie. For this carte blanche, the Ghanaian sculptor invests the space of this timeless place, a royal palace in the Middle Ages that became a prison during the Revolution. This in situ poetic installation invites us to look at the past and the world around us in a different way, seen through an African prism. El Anatsui calls on the public to re-appropriate this place so that everyone can bring their own history, memories and personal emotions to it. As for the materials used, stone or water, they refer to the passing of time and make us aware of its importance. El Anatsui generally draws its inspiration from African traditions: recycling, misappropriation of manufactured objects, wooden sculpture... His works question trade, destruction and the passage of time, symbols of the events that the African continent has experienced. The Conciergerie is honoured to receive the artist at the Golden Lion for the opening of the Africa2020 Season. From December to July 2021, more than 200 events in France will take place to honour an entire continent!
