Estelle Hanania has always been interested in subjects of curiosity: rituals with giant chimera masks, traditional ceremonial costumes, men of the field... In another unusual style, the French photographer has been accompanying the director Gisèle Vienne in her puppet and ventriloquism shows for ten years now. It is this work, finalized by Hanania's latest publication, It's Alive! that the Maison Européenne de la Photographie presents today. There is no readable information in the photos, and there lies the full prowess of the artist whose world is born before the eyes of the viewer, before our very eyes. Hanania slips on stage or behind the scenes of Vienna's shows, but far from choosing a documentary look, she brings to life these models and dolls dressed as young girls. Halfway between reality and fiction, she plays with appearances and with the details of the stage. This confusion of references loses the spectator, plunged into a strange universe where only a feeling of discomfort remains. For him, and for you, there is only one thing left to do: follow the photos and reconstruct the story.
