JonOne's style is based on a founding element: the vision of a subway train covered with graffiti that only shows a set of coloured streaks as it passes before our eyes. The American artist is associated with the New York graffiti scene of the late 1970s, from which he draws his inspiration and the origin of his practice. His painting gradually moved from walls to canvas when he arrived in France in 1987. His paintings then look like graffiti transposed out of their usual support: typical graffiti lettering that overlap, disordered and dripping paint projections, choice of bright colours to attract the eye or monochromatic sets to reinforce an optical effect close to that of the subway passage, speed of execution. Little by little emancipated from the canons of graffiti, JonOne is enriched by the influence of modernist painting. His attention goes to movement and colour, rather than figuration. This season, the exhibition at Rabouan Moussion is the ideal opportunity to (re)discover JonOne's original approach to street art, as well as to understand his path and his inspirations!
