Man Ray is one of the few surrealist photographic artists. His photographs are known worldwide. But did you know that he started out as a fashion photographer? The Musée du Luxembourg is devoting a beautiful exhibition to him from a fashion point of view! Emblematic photographer of the 20th century, Man Ray started in the fashion world in 1921. He worked for the greatest couturiers: Poiret, Schiaparelli, Chanel, and the greatest magazines: Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar. While fashion photography was still in its infancy, his penchant for surrealism and technical experimentation led him to move away from the documentary aesthetics of the time. Original compositions, reframings, play of light and shadow, solarizations, colorizations allow him to innovate. Man Ray does not only wish to report on clothes, but seeks to create a true modern aesthetic for fashion photography, inspired by the art of the stage and contemporary cultural life. With his work, the boundaries between art and fashion become blurred and he becomes one of the most recognized fashion photographers of the time.
