Hôtel National des Invalides
19 May → 13 Feb 2022
Every day from 10 am to 5 pm.
Whether we hate him or admire him, we must admit that Napoleon is at the origin of important political and social changes in France of which we are all heirs. Subject of many controversies, Napoleon is a personality enormously represented through works of art, films and books, committed or not. The greatest artists of their centuries have tried to translate the first French emperor in pictorial form. From Jacques-Louis David to Louis Lumière to Youssef Chahine, Napoleon has inspired entire generations and different countries. This exceptional exhibition in the Hôtel National des Invalides creates a dialogue between the architecture of the 17th century building and the collections of the Musée de l'Armée with works by contemporary artists, who reveal their vision of this much-contested figure. Together, they explore the Napoleonic legacy as well as the emperor's strong personality and historical events with both temporal and critical distance.
