Faced with Covid-19, the United States was not well prepared and equipped to overcome this global pandemic. The sixth solo exhibition of Rirkrit Tiravanija at Chantal Crousel's is taking place in a complex atmosphere. Indeed, the current international context is important for the artist who really wanted to make this exhibition now. It dismantles the image of a strong America that has failed to manage the health, social, political and cultural crisis. For him, it is a whole country that seems to be collapsing, the American dream being far behind him! Inspired by Jasper Johns and Marcel Duchamp, Rirkrit Tiravanija appropriates the American flag, both ready-made and icon of pop culture. As for the slogans, they are placed on top with pages from the daily press. Invented or chosen, they circulate on different mediums: flag, geographical map of the country, classic Aubusson carpets, marble. Between modernism and tradition, these works plunge us into an American-style memorial atmosphere: marble tombstones, flag, staging... All that's missing is the national anthem! These are works that escape time, between materiality and immateriality of matter and translate the relationships between human beings. It's up to you to realize your own experience!
