Almine Rech Gallery
13 Jun → 1 Aug 2020
From Tuesday to Saturday 11 am to 7 pm. Closed Sunday and Monday.
With the group exhibition Summer, the Almine Rech gallery questions the artist's gesture in its joyful dimension, all practices and generations together. Thinking about the work, conceptualizing it, choosing its form, but also making it: there is no doubt an overwhelming pleasure in creating and rendering this pleasure in colour, material and gesture. It is this joy that creates the beauty of the piece as well as the emotion it arouses. To create is also a game: to distort the references and subjects of art history, to avoid the pitfall of a common representation and a limitation within a movement that one seeks to surpass. Karel Appel, Tursic & Mille or Jean-Baptiste Bernadet propose a landscape free of any naturalist representation. Brian Calvin revisits the tradition of the portrait by taking the path of the imaginary, sometimes to the point of abstraction, as Tamuna Sirbiladze does. Allen Jones and Alexandre Lenoir create genre scenes without narration. Full of irony, John M Armleder questions the history of abstraction. As for the floral compositions, they come to life in the work of Taryn Simon, Gregor Hildebrandt or Johan Creten. One by one, these iconic artists of Almine Rech play with art and enjoy it.
