In the framework of Season Africa2020, Luandan curator Suzana Sousa and MAM curator Odile Burluraux brought together 16 women artists from English-speaking and Portuguese-speaking African countries and the Diaspora around a general theme: the status of women. They addressed the themes of the body, self-representation, motherhood, beliefs and sexuality. So many subjects that question the intimacy of black women and reveal unspoken unspoken things. They do not all necessarily claim their feminist position in their political commitment, but the fact that they have gathered under the same theme allows them to share their individual experiences to denounce something that is ultimately universal. Their creative hands unveil personal events specific to each one to finally unite and give voice to these women lurking in the shadows. On display are photographs, pottery, paintings, performances and videos by Stacey Gillian Abe, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Gabrielle Goliath, Kudzanai, Violet Hwami, Keyezua, Lebohang Kganye, Kapwani Kiwanga, Senzeni Marasela, Grace Ndiritu, Wura-Natasha Ogunji, Reinata Sadimba, Lerato Shadi, Ana Silva, Buhlebezwe Siwani, Billie Zangewa and Portia Zvavahera. Discover a part of the contemporary African scene through MAM's desire to highlight women artists! Not to be missed as soon as the museums reopen!
