« A committed woman-artist, a subtle and coherent work tinged with a striking black humour!  »

Zined Sedira, a British artist of French and Algerian origin, defines herself as a "guardian of images", and therefore inexorably as a "guardian of memory". For this is what his work is about, a work on memory, its conservation, its transmission, but also the alterations that affect it. Le Jeu de Paume invited the artist to present a panorama of this work, from 1998 to today and through forms as diverse as video, film, installation and photography. The works selected reflect the artist's interest in oral histories, their collection, recording and transmission, but also reveal his deep interest in postcolonial history and in the problems of global ecological destruction due to overproduction and the universal movement of people and goods. For this exhibition, Zineb Sedira created "Standing Here Wondering Which Way to Go" (2019), a work produced with the support of the Jeu de Paume, the Institut Valenciá d'Art Moderno (IVAM), the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum (Lisbon) and the Bildmuseet (Sweden). It is the result of his reflection on the utopian era of the 1960s and in particular on the role that the Algerian state played, following its independence in 1962, in the liberation movements of the countries of the African continent.
